Arguably the biggest fight of the year is here. Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are set to throw down in an undisputed super middleweight title fight on Saturday night inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The fight has the opportunity to add to the legacy of both men as they near the end of storied runs inside the ring.
The fight takes place on Mexican Independence Day, an occasion now synonymous with fights featuring the top Mexican star today. The reigning super middleweight champion defends his titles against Crawford, the latter of whom moves up to 168 pounds for the first time in his career. Crawford, who has won world titles from lightweight to junior middleweight, has never fought in excess of 154 pounds. It’s Canelo’s most high-profile fight since battling Dmitry Bivol in 2022.
“I enjoy sparring the most. I can spar every day, but [coach Eddy Reynoso] doesn’t like it. … [Crawford is] a really good fighter, and this is a challenge for me,” Alvarez said during the Netflix countdown show. “It’s different. We need to spar with both southpaws and right-handers.
“Everybody has issues with that kind of style. But I’m working for that. And I have the experience to face every style now. I’m different. I have everything to lose because he is coming up two weight classes. But I always like to challenge myself.”
The fight, billed as “Once In A Lifetime,” is the first Zuffa Boxing event promoted by UFC CEO Dana White under parent company TKO. The undercard features an interim super middleweight title fight between champion Christian M’billi and Lester Martinez, plus Callum Walsh vs. Fernando Vargas Jr. in a clash between rising prospects.
