Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday Russian forces had captured nearly 5,000 square km (1,930 square miles) of Ukrainian territory this year, claiming Moscow retained “complete strategic initiative” on the battlefield. The gains represent about 1% of Ukraine’s land area, bringing total Russian control to nearly 20%.
