Asking the Pixel 10 to be more than what it is feels greedy.Google’s non-Pro Pixel is priced fairly at $799, which is significantly less than the $999 Pixel 10 Pro. It comes with some handy upgrades, like Qi2 charging with built-in magnets. Its AI features finally show promise. It includes a dedicated telephoto lens for the first time. It’s a proper flagship and an all-around easygoing Android phone. But if I’m being greedy, then I do have one request: better cameras. The rear cameras on the Pixel 10 are totally fine. For someone who’s not picky about image quality, they’d be…
The climate crisis will continue making lightning-sparked wildfires more frequent for decades to come, which could produce cascading effects and worsen public safety and public health, experts and new research suggest.Lightning-caused fires tend to burn in more remote areas and therefore usually grow into larger fires than human-caused fires. That means a trend toward more lightning-caused fires is also probably making wildfires more deadly by producing more wildfire smoke and helping to drive a surge in air quality issues from coast to coast, especially over the past several years.Over the last 40 years, thunderstorms and other weather conditions favoring lightning…

There’s a tongue-in-cheek saying we have in South Florida that you’ll see hung on signs all over the place: “I live where you vacation.” With over 1,700 islands, 800 keys, and year-round, sunny weather, the Florida Keys are a slice of key lime-flavored heaven. No matter which one you visit, you can’t go wrong—but there are certainly things that I return to when I make the trek back today. Growing up, my family owned a home in Islamorada, Florida. I’m not talking about the traditional two-story Floridian stilt houses, but rather a one-bedroom trailer off of mile marker 87.5, with…

Heavy hang the themes permeating Nadia Latif’s adaptation of Walter Mosley’s 2004 novel. Unlike the crime fiction that has proven so popular for the author, The Man in the Basement, while possessing some thriller-ish aspects, is more a book of ideas. Too many ideas, probably, since the fairly simple storylines touch on such themes as power dynamics, race relations, colonialism, guilt, redemption and more. The film, co-written by Mosley and Latif, the latter making her feature directorial debut, faces the nearly impossible task of making all these ideas coherent — and only partially succeeds. But thanks to its powerful atmospherics…
