One mark of whether someone has the boldness to be a good pop star is how they respond to overhearing someone slagging them off. A few weeks ago, the Icelandic-Chinese jazz-pop phenomenon Laufey was at a coffee shop close to her Los Angeles home when her ears pricked up at the mention of her name (it’s pronounced “Lay-vay”, by the way). “I used to love her,” a young woman told her friends. “I’ve met her and she’s so sweet, but her music is unlistenable now.”In that split-second, Laufey realised that she could do the Normal Person Thing (slink away unnoticed and furiously text…

It provides a rare, complex, behind-the-scenes look at how local leaders during a much earlier phase of the…

I’ve long dreamed of doing all my gaming on PC — a single platform that’s easily upgradeable and lets me play my overstuffed Steam library wherever and however I like. The Steam Deck is a fantastic handheld, but for my living room, I want something more powerful that works as well on my TV as it does at a desk. Believe me, I’ve tried. Gaming laptops are noisy and awkward, desktops are too chunky, and Windows is annoying to navigate without a keyboard and mouse. I had hoped that Valve’s Steam Machine experiment was my ticket, but it crashed and…
Midway through his set at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York, on Saturday night, Neil Young sat at the piano and performed his Reagan-era protest song “Long Walk Home” for the first time since 1989. The lyrics were largely faithful to the original version on Young’s 1987 LP Life with one crucial difference. “From Vietnam to old Beirut/If we are searching for the truth/Why do we feel that double-edged blade/Cutting through our hand” from the album was changed to “From Canada to Old Ukraine/We broke our word and left the pain/Why do we feel that double-edged blade/Cutting through our…
