The over-century-old Kiruna Church in northern Sweden has completed its 5 km relocation to avoid damage from ground instability caused by iron-ore mining. The move, part of a larger urban transformation of Kiruna, was carried out successfully and marks a major milestone in adapting the town to its shifting landscape.
Walmart has recalled frozen, raw shrimp sold in 13 states because federal health officials say it could have potential radioactive contamination. The US Food and Drug Administration asked Walmart to pull three lots of Great Value brand frozen shrimp from stores after federal officials detected Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in shipping containers and a sample of breaded shrimp imported from Indonesia. The products could pose a “potential health concern” for people exposed to low levels of Cesium-137 over time, FDA officials said.“If you have recently purchased raw frozen shrimp from Walmart that matches this description, throw it away,” FDA officials said in…
Battery materials startup Group14 announced Wednesday it has closed a $463 million funding round to expand its manufacturing footprint, a sign that investors remain confident in the future of electric vehicles. The startup manufactures silicon anode materials, which significantly boost the storage capacity of lithium-ion batteries. Group14 currently operates three factories, two in the U.S. and one in South Korea. Despite headlines about softening demand growth for electric vehicles, the global market for lithium-ion batteries remains strong. Over the next decade, it’s expected to grow more than 15% annually, quintupling in size, according to Precedence Research. And automakers and investors…

When the derivative Netflix spy drama Treason premiered in 2022, I used the Charlie Cox vehicle as an excuse to write a small treatise on the institutional misuse and overuse of in medias res openings. I’ve occasionally needed to reference what I wrote, but I’ve never been able to consistently remember what show I pegged the analysis to. Treason has a wholly generic title, and while it has an OK cast and the recognizable structure of a television series, it’s among the more forgettable dramas of an era that has had more than a few forgettable dramas. There are countless…
In some countries, using the bathroom comes at a cost. Many European cities have public bathrooms that are clean and convenient. However, access isn’t free. Be sure to carry some coins with you so you are prepared when nature calls. You may also need to pay to use the bathroom even when you make a purchase, such as at gas stations, train stations, or cafes. The price to use the bathroom is typically modest, but you may find yourself in an uncomfortable situation if you don’t have enough change to pay. Moreover, even in countries where using the restroom is free,…
The simulation made it possible to appreciate how a human embryo does not merely adhere to the uterine lining, but actively inserts itself. “We observe that the embryo pulls on the uterine matrix, moving and reorganizing it,” explained Amélie Godeau, coauthor of the research, which was published in Science Advances. These movements could explain the pain some women report days after fertilization. “Although it’s known that many women experience abdominal pain and light bleeding during implantation, the process itself has never been observed before,” Ojosnegros said.Different Species, Different TacticsThe researchers also compared the implantation of human embryos and mouse embryos. They…
A distinct farmyard smell lingers near the muddy Sheep Paintings. People walk slowly between two dense hedges of windfallen oak branches, or stand silently in a fragile cage of bulrush stems with light seeping through the mossy skylight overhead. I’m visiting the largest ever indoor exhibition of work by Andy Goldsworthy, one of Britain’s most influential nature artists. His recent installations have a visceral sense of rural landscape: hare’s blood on paper, sheep shit on canvas, rusty barbed wire, stained wool, cracked clay. The show is a sensory celebration of earth – its textures and temperatures, colours, character. The seasons cycle…
