It was an exhilarating day in every possible way. Standing on the cold sand on a Sunday morning, I saw the sun flash off powerful surf as it curved into whitewater that rushed up the beach. The sound of it boomed around the nearby cliffs. The passing clouds threw dark green patches across the frothy water, the air was crisp and dry. Today’s swim promised to be great. The members of my winter swimming club were pulling on cozzies, bright pink swimming caps and goggles as they assessed the challenging conditions. The car park was jammed with surfers from all around.…
Sonny Curtis, who wrote such classics as “I Fought the Law,” “Walk Right Back” and the theme for the “Mary Tyler Moore” show, “Love Is All Around,” died Friday after a sudden illness, according to a social media post by his daughter. Curtis also worked closely with Buddy Holly and performed with his band, the Crickets, both before and after the legendary singer’s death. He was 88. A native of Texas, Curtis was born in 1937 to a musical family — his uncles performed in a bluegrass group called the Mayfield Brothers. He met Buddy Holly at the age of 15…

Ducati’s new low-slung 168-horsepower muscle bike is meant to appeal to sport bike riders who have tired of the racer-crouch riding position but still want a sophisticated and powerful ride. That’s according to old friend Jason Chinnock, who is Ducati North America’s CEO. Chinnock’s not just the CEO; he’s also put in his miles on the race-replica bikes that build Ducati’s reputation for performance. The XDiavel V4’s 1,158cc four-cylinder engine is the bike’s centerpiece, both visually and technically. It even earns a spot in the model’s…

Flights have been delayed and cancelled at three leading European airports – including London’s largest, Heathrow – after the company behind the software used for check-in and boarding said it was hit by a cyber-attack.Airports in Brussels and Berlin are also experiencing delays and disruption as a result of the problem affecting Collins Aerospace, which works for several airlines at airports across the world. The attack has raised concerns about the robustness of the systems underpinning critical infrastructure, with a prominent cybersecurity expert suggesting the disruption could theoretically spread to more airports. The transport secretary, Heidi Alexander, has said she is…
Daniel Wainwright and Harriet AgerholmData Journalists, BBC VerifyGetty ImagesThe figures strike a blow to the government’s promise to deliver 1.5 million homes by the next election. The number of planning approvals for new homes in England is unacceptable, the new housing secretary has said, after official data showed permission for building homes fell to a record low during Labour’s first year in office.Fewer than 29,000 projects were granted permission by councils in the year ending June 2025 – striking a blow to the government’s promise to deliver 1.5 million homes by the next election.Steve Reed, who has taken over from Angela…
I’ve been spoiled by the automatic assist available on Bosch mid-drive motors. The next best thing is probably something like the Shimano Devore XT/SLX shifters on this Carbon, paired with the power monitoring. The 12-speed system, with a 10-51t cassette range, shifted at the speed of thought. Your handlebar display gives you a color-coded guide when you should probably shift up or down, based on your cadence and wattage output. The controls for the Carbon’s display, power, and switch are just this little switch, with three places to press and an up/down switch. Sometimes I thought it was clever and…
It’s often said that the romcom is dead. Kiss goodbye to the crisp charm of Nora Ephron’s freshly sharpened pencil bouquets in the fall, embrace the era of musings on love as nothing more than a maths equation. Then along comes gripping teen romance The Summer I Turned Pretty and it gets us at the first Taylor Swift track.Across its 26-episode run, the adaptation of Jenny Han’s trilogy of novels has won the hearts of millennials who have been desperately yearning for a nostalgic watch to fill the void of 00s romcoms. Reminiscent of rose-tinted love stories of their youth,…
The ninth-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini battle the No. 19 Indiana Hoosiers in a Big Ten opener for both teams on Saturday night. Illinois is coming off a 38-0 win over Western Michigan, while Indiana crushed Indiana State 73-0 in Week 3. The Fighting Illini (3-0), who finished in a tie with Iowa for fifth in the Big Ten at 6-3 and were 10-3 overall last season, are 3-2 on the road over the past two years. The Hoosiers (3-0), who tied with Penn State for second in the conference at 8-1 and were 11-2 overall, are 11-0 at home since…
For one thing, the systems he imagines process data relatively slowly compared to those on terra firma. They’d be constantly bombarded by radiation, and “obsolescence would be a problem” because making repairs or upgrades would be confoundingly difficult. Hajimiri believes that data centers in space could, someday, be a viable solution but hesitates to say when that day might come. “Definitely it would be doable in a few years,” he said. “The question is how effective they would be, and how cost-effective they would become.”The idea of simply putting data centers in orbit is not limited to the offhand musings…
