Fresh off France’s decision to submit his Cannes-winning “It Was Just an Accident” for Oscar consideration, Jafar Panahi leveraged his appearance at a Busan International Film Festival press conference to advocate for fundamental reform in how the Academy handles international feature submissions. The filmmaker, who received BIFF’s Asian Filmmaker of the Year honor, argued that the current system forces directors in non-democratic nations to depend on government approval for Oscar eligibility — a barrier that doesn’t exist for other major film festivals. “We have a slight problem with the Academy and its international section,” said Panahi, whose film is screening…
Alan Sheehan says Swansea City have every right to believe again, as their Premier League scalp of Nottingham Forest showed their promise is more than just stars in the boardroom.Swansea’s introduction of Croatia great Luka Modric and rap star Snoop Dogg into their ownership structure has seen the Championship club back in the spotlight. And their summer spending – their most expensive outlay since relegation from the Premier League in 2018 – has seen hope of a return to the top-flight flicker back into life.It smouldered further even amid the south Wales rain as they humbled Ange Postecoglou and knocked Forest…
Someone have a word with the chimps? Observations of the apes in the wild show them imbibing the alcoholic equivalent of a half pint of beer a day through the vast amount of fermented fruit in their diet.Researchers arrived at the first estimates of wild chimp daily alcohol intake after measuring ethanol levels in fallen fruit that the apes gather from the forest floor in Kibale national park in Uganda and in Taï national park in Ivory Coast. While individual fruits contained less than 0.5% alcohol, the chimps’ daily intake swelled as they devoured the ripe fruit pulp. The apes were…
Celebrating Robert Redford: Stephen Galloway reflects on life, legacy of the golden boy of Hollywood
As we celebrate the life of cinema legend Robert Redford, Erin Ogunkeye is pleased to welcome Stephen Galloway, former Executive Editor of The Hollywood Reporter and current Dean at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. Mr. Galloway brings a thoughtful, nuanced reflection on Redford’s legacy as actor, director, artist, and activist. Behind the enduring image of Hollywood’s “golden boy” was a man of great complexity. Redford maintained the mystique of movie star while reshaping culture through his directorial vision, his championing of independent cinema, and his deep commitment to environmentalism. “I was born with a dark eye,” he once…
The former chief US economics data statistics who Donald Trump fired last month called her sudden removal “dangerous” and said Americans should be concerned about the independence of key economic institutions.“Markets have to trust the data are not manipulated,” said Erika McEntarfer, the former head of the Bureau Labor of Statistics, in her first remarks since her firing. “Firing your chief statisticians for releasing data you do not like, it has serious economic consequences.”The bureau collects and releases key economic data on the labor market and prices. In August, the bureau revised down initial figures that showed steady job growth…
It takes time to realize you don’t have to hold your hand out in front of you for these gestures to be recognized, but a surprisingly short amount of time to find yourself using them with very little second thought.Of course talking to Meta AI remains a key way of interacting with the glasses, but Meta hopes that adding the visual elements will enhance the chatbot experience. For example, live speech captioning and language translation is still switched on by voice—but with Meta Ray-Ban Display, you can see the translations and captions appearing in real time on the glasses rather…
A daily dose of aspirin can substantially reduce the risk of some colorectal cancers returning after surgery, according to a major trial into the protective effects of the everyday painkiller.Swedish researchers found that people who took a low daily dose of aspirin after having their tumour removed were half as likely to have their cancer return over the next three years than patients who took a placebo. The trial involved cancer patients whose tumours carried specific genetic mutations that made them susceptible to aspirin’s anti-cancer properties. About 40% of colorectal cancer patients have such mutations.“I think this will change clinical practice,”…

Starting with the 2026 budget, this pathetic ceremony will no longer be funded by taxpayers’ money. Under my watch, Israeli citizens will not pay from their pockets for a ceremony that spits in…
