Opener Jake Weatherald has secured a place in the Australian squad and is the leading contender to partner Usman Khawaja at the top of the order for the first Ashes Test.
But chief selector George Bailey said the Tasmania batter had not yet secured a spot in the XI, and said he would wait until the end of the coming round of Sheffield Shield matches before he decides on the final lineup.
“The squad gives us good balance and, with 14 of those chosen playing the next round of Sheffield Shield, we will continue to gather information as we move closer to the start of the first Test,” Bailey said.
The first Ashes Test begins in Perth on 21 November.
Australian squad: Steve Smith (captain), Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Brendan Doggett, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald and Beau Webster.
