Ricky Saints defeated Trick Williams at Halloween Havoc on Saturday to retain the NXT Championship.
Several weeks ago, Saints and Williams joined forces as part of Team NXT in the four-on-four men’s elimination match against Team TNA on the NXT vs. TNA Showdown edition of NXT.
Saints was chosen by NXT general manager Ava as the captain of Team NXT, which angered Williams, who felt he was deserving of the honor given his status as an NXT Superstar who was the reigning TNA world champion at the time.
During the latter stages of the match, Williams walked out, leaving Saints to fend for himself. Saints was unable to overcome Mike Santana and Moose, as Team TNA came out on top.
Trick went on to drop the TNA world title to Santana at Bound for Glory, but it wasn’t long before he was granted another shot at championship gold.
On the Oct. 14 episode of NXT, an enraged Saints called out Williams, but rather than coming to the ring to confront Saints, Trick responded from the backstage area.
Later in the show, Saints was laid out backstage at the hands of Williams, setting the stage for their NXT Championship match.
On the go-home episode of NXT before Halloween Havoc, both Saints and Williams cut fiery promos on each other. Trick hit Ricky with a sucker punch, but Saints stood tall to end the show.
That momentum worked to Saints’ advantage at Halloween Havoc, as he got the better of Williams and retained in his first title defense since winning it from Oba Femi at No Mercy.
