Hugh Bonneville Feels That ‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ Is ‘A Good Farewell To Our Audience’
Downton Abbey franchise star Hugh Bonneville — who has played Robert Crowley in the TV series and movies since the show began in 2010 — told Moviefone in an interview before the film opened in September that he was happy with the way Julian Fellowes wrapped up Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale with his screenplay.
“Well, we always knew that this was going to be the third and final film. The script went through many changes during its development. Julian was batting it back and forth, and the final iteration seemed the appropriate one,” Bonneville told Moviefone.
“Where there are so many farewells within the story, so many elements of regime change, if you like, both upstairs and down, with the changing of the guard,” Bonneville added. “It just felt like a good farewell to our audience who have been the real driving force in sustaining us for so long.”
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale was met with enthusiasm by Rotten Tomatoes critics and audiences. The film received a 91% “fresh” rating from critics based on 137 reviews and a 96% “fresh” score on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 2,500-plus verified user ratings.
Rated PG, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale will arrive on Peacock on Nov. 7.
